Pressing a key on your MIDI controller will trigger a Gesture and begin cycling through whatever modulation envelopes it contains, with the plug‑in waiting for the next pre‑specified beat/bar division before engaging the effects. The Length of each Gesture can range from two bars down to a 16th‑note triplet, while the timeline Grid for a Gesture can be set between one bar and a 64th note. A Gesture contains timeline information, too, determining how parameter modulation is scaled to fit the grid and when a Gesture begins and ends.
The effects are applied using what Izotope call Gestures, which are made up of one or more effects modules (Stutter Gestures) or a noise generator (Generator Gestures), and are each tied to a single MIDI note. What's more, everything is automatically sync'ed to the host tempo, making flawless transitions, fills and breakdowns a breeze. It works by constantly sampling the incoming audio and storing it in a buffer, so that it can be used for repeating short loops or slices, among other things. Stutter Edit is an effects plug‑in that can manipulate an audio source in a variety of ways. Enter Stutter Edit, which has been co‑developed with trance producer BT (see the 'Trigger Finger' box). Izotope have given the world plenty of top‑notch signal processing tools over the years, including Ozone 4, RX2, Nectar and Trash, but they haven't before released anything designed for use in a live environment.
When choosing MIDI/Auto mode it gives DAW-specific instructions with pictures of how to use it.Izotope have teamed up with electronic composer BT to bring us an effects processor that can be 'played' in real time. If it doesn't, this won't either.Īside: really cool feature. So if you have the previous one, give it another try and see if it works with the way you do. If you're sequencing/automating in the DAW with precise intent you may be more comfortable doing just that. This is competing with things like NI's The Finger. So all the thinking and work is done before the performance, and you don't know the exact material it will be applied to. If you haven't really used the previous one then this may be initially inspiring but it's a very specific workflow for live performance where you're planning out what you'd like to happen but aren't fast enough to do it live so you just want to trigger it (or let auto mode/serendipity happen). If you used the previous one a lot you'll love it. The most noticeable thing though is each module can maximize/zoom to the curve view, and the entire plugin is resizable. So the new one lets you choose any beat time at any point along the the entire time range. Have you used the original? The stutter there lets you choose a range of beat times and transition shape and that was it.
There's a full curve-based sequencer now. The namesake feature, the stuttering, of which the buffer is a huge component of, is much improved and fleshed out. The DSP may be the same (plus some new FX) but the control is much expanded and GUI improved. It certainly feels built from the ground up.
